Fife is a great place to explore with kids. From beaches and parks to museums and castles, there are plenty of family-friendly activities and attractions to enjoy. Here are some top things to do with children when visiting Fife.

Explore Dunfermline

Dunfermline is a historic town a 30-minute drive from Fife with lots to offer families. A top attraction is Dunfermline Abbey and Palace, the final resting place of Robert the Bruce and an ancient abbey with Royal connections. Wander the abbey grounds and admire the architecture. There is also a great museum on the history of Dunfermline and Andrew Carnegie’s birthplace nearby to visit.

Spend a Day at the Beach

Fife has some beautiful beaches along the Firth of Forth. If you are fostering with fcascotland.co.uk, take the kids to East Wemyss beach for rockpooling and exploring the many rockpools when the tide goes out. There’s also West Sands beach in St Andrews, popular for its long expanse of sand and views of St Andrews Castle and Cathedral ruins. Crail Harbour Beach is another nice option, a small sheltered beach next to colourful fishing cottages.

Visit a Farm

Experience life on the farm at one of Fife’s child-friendly agricultural attractions. Cairnie Fruit Farm near Cupar has tractor rides, animal feeding, and fruit picking during summer. Cambo Estate near St Andrews offers tractor-pulled trailer rides around the farm where kids can see sheep, cattle, horses, and more up close. Pick your own strawberries at Balcaskie Estate or pat animals at Wilkieston Farm.

Museums and Historic Sites

There are several interesting museums and historic sites to pique kids’ curiosity. The Scottish Fisheries Museum in Anstruther brings fishing heritage to life through interactive and hands-on exhibits. Kids can climb aboard historic boats, view fishing films, and see aquariums.

St Andrews Cathedral and St Andrews Castle are atmospheric historic ruins to explore, with St Andrews Cathedral having an interactive kids’ exhibit. Kellie Castle near Pittenweem spans from medieval to Victorian eras and has gardens, woodlands, and artworks for kids to enjoy.

Visit an Aquarium

St Andrews Aquarium is a small aquarium located in the heart of St Andrews. It houses over 30 displays with local and exotic fish and marine invertebrates. Interactive exhibits allow kids to touch starfish and sea urchins. The aquarium offers an up-close look at sea life for families visiting this historic seaside town.

Outdoor Activities

The Lomond Hills Regional Park offers wonderful outdoor activities for active kids and families. There are walking and cycling trails to enjoy as well as two hill summits, West Lomond and East Lomond. Climb to the top for panoramic views over Fife. The Falkland Estate also has woodland walks, playgrounds and bike trails, while Balbirnie Park has a deer park, adventure playground and marked trails.

With its mix of cultural sites, nature activities and kid-focused attractions, the Fife area offers endless fun for families visiting the region. From castles to beaches, farms and parks, there are plenty of great things to see and do with children of all ages when exploring this part of Scotland.
